Dikeni in Shock: Bail Bid Sparks Outrage
The bail application judgment of Awonke Dibela has been postponed to 23rd of June by Alice Magistrate Court. Awonke Dibela, accused of the brutal rape and murder of his cousin, Sambesiwe Dlanga, (20) UWC student.
Awonke’s defense argues he is a taxi operator, caretaker of his sister’s children, a first-time offender who surrendered to police, and that there is no “direct evidence” linking him to the killing — despite forensic findings showing his DNA inside Sambesiwe’s body, buried underground. Witnesses confirm he was the last person seen with her, though he initially denied this.
His lawyer insists the two were secretly in a relationship, but Sambesiwe’s family attorney calls this “a web of lies,” warning that granting bail would shatter public trust in justice and endanger community peace.
Community members, church leaders, and the Lovedale African Reformed Congregation have united in court, demanding no bail for Awonke, declaring him a danger to society and calling for justice for Sambesiwe.
